Read eBook ã The Flame Imperishable áTolkien Ô Jonathan S McIntosh The Flame Imperishable, Tolkien, St, Thomas, and the Metaphysics of FaerieThis book is by far the best examination of the philosophy behind Tolkien's legendarium I have ever read a natural companion and corrective to Flieger’s “Splintered Light” Although Tolkien has been recognized as the author of the century rightly in my view and his books are appreciated by millions I would say that the uality of his fiction comes second only to his philosophical insights or rather it is the philosophy behind the writing that makes the latter so beautiful fresh andenchantingUnlike most probably all current writers in the fantasy genre Tolkien explored the meaning of what the very act of writing and creating a fantasy world meant what its purposes are and how fantasy functions upon the imagination While others are

Read eBook ã The Flame Imperishable áTolkien Ô Jonathan S McIntosh The Flame Imperishable, Tolkien, St, Thomas, and the Metaphysics of FaerieThis is one of the best if not the best book on Tolkien that I've ever read The uestion of Tolkien's philosophy in writing his fiction have always fascinated me but there has long been a disagreement in scholarship as to where he was planted is Tolkien's work pagan? Gnostic? Christian? Modern? Medieval? McIntosh's work doesn't just choose one and argue it nor does it choose them all and say that Tolkien's philosophy is ambiguous and undeveloped McIntosh shows that Tolkien is heavily indebted to St Thomas and the Thomastic culture he grew up in but also how he uses Thomastic ideas and theology to re mythologize the world from common things to religious discourse One of the reviewers on the back writes that this book will become a seminal book or canon and it should McIntosh's work re founds and focuses phil

Read eBook ã The Flame Imperishable áTolkien Ô Jonathan S McIntosh The Flame Imperishable, Tolkien, St, Thomas, and the Metaphysics of FaerieOn the whole I enjoyed the book However you'd really have to know Auinas to follow many parts of the book The author presents Auinas' position on a certain topic and then demonstrates how this position is illustrated in Tolkien's work Note most of the Tolkien references are to the Silmarillion While I enjoyed the Tolkien portions the Auinas portions were confusing and hard to follow I don't blame the author I believe that confusing and hard to follow is what Auinas is This is a very scholarly book Not a uick or easy read but I do feel that it was well worth my time to work through i
